In a shocking display of liberal activism trumping the rule of law, a Washington D.C. jury has acquitted an individual who clearly assaulted a police officer by throwing a sandwich at them. This verdict is a slap in the face to law enforcement and a dangerous signal that disrespect for authority and criminal behavior will be tolerated in our nation's capital.
The defendant made the choice to lash out violently at the police officer. In America's system of individual liberty and personal responsibility, he alone is accountable for this unacceptable action. Being frustrated with a presidential administration is no excuse for physically assaulting those who put their lives on the line every day to keep our communities safe.
This dereliction of civic duty by the D.C. jury is an affront to traditional American values of respecting authority, obeying just laws, and facing appropriate consequences for one's actions. It undermines the fundamental Constitutional principle of equal justice under the law. Sadly, it is not surprising in a city that has long been dominated by big government liberals hostile to law enforcement.
The Trump administration was absolutely correct in sending additional federal law enforcement resources to help restore basic law and order in Washington D.C. Rampant crime, frequent riots, and attacks on police have created a crisis that local officials have proven unwilling or unable to solve. Federal law enforcement personnel are Constitutionally empowered to protect federal property and ensure domestic tranquility. Rather than being condemned, their presence should be welcomed by those who value safety and stability.
Hopefully this miscarriage of justice will be a wake-up call to the voters of D.C. to elect new leaders who will take crime seriously, support police, and create an environment where businesses can thrive and provide economic opportunity. The failed liberal policies have held the city back for far too long. It's time to embrace a new vision grounded in time-tested conservative principles of limited government, individual responsibility, and the rule of law.
