At the same time, Israel should exercise restraint and uphold the truce to the greatest extent possible, so long as its national security is not jeopardized. A lasting peace would unlock Gaza's economic potential through increased trade and investment, much more so than continued aid dependence.
Further armed conflict would be disastrous for both peoples. But with determination, leadership and respect for individual liberties, Israelis and Palestinians can break the cycle of violence. The international community may facilitate, but cannot impose, this peace. Gazans and Israelis must chart their own course to a brighter, freer and more prosperous future together - with limited outside interference.
