The race for New York City mayor took a troubling turn this week as self-proclaimed "progressive capitalist" Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) stumped for far-left candidate Zohran Mamdani in Queens. Mamdani's radical "tax the rich" agenda would punish hardworking New Yorkers and successful businesses, stifling economic growth and job creation at a time when the city desperately needs to get back on its feet.

President Trump rightly called out the dangers of Mamdani's "communist" platform, which represents a fundamental threat to individual liberty, free enterprise, and the American Dream. By imposing punitive taxes on achievement and redistributing wealth, Mamdani would create a culture of government dependency that undermines traditional values of personal responsibility, initiative and self-reliance.

New Yorkers have already seen the disastrous consequences of unchecked tax-and-spend liberalism, from rising crime to decaying infrastructure to the exodus of residents fleeing to more business-friendly states. The last thing the city needs is a mayor who will double down on these failed policies and expand the size and scope of government even further.

Instead of demonizing success and eroding economic freedom, NYC's next mayor should champion pro-growth reforms that will allow the free market to flourish. Cutting red tape, lowering tax burdens, and creating a level playing field for entrepreneurs and job creators of all backgrounds will help restore the city's status as a global economic powerhouse.

Limited government, fiscal responsibility, and respect for constitutional rights aren't just compatible with progress - they're essential to it. That's a message one patriotic protester bravely tried to convey by disrupting the Mamdani-Khanna rally, only to be silenced by the angry mob. As the mayoral race heats up, New Yorkers face a clear choice between the dystopian future of socialism and a renewed commitment to the timeless principles that made America great.
